The words leaders speak have the power to build others up and break them down. While everyone has leadership blind spots, sometimes even the most intelligent leaders make unwise comments and then are surprised when they don\u2019t get the results they expected. LollyDaskal, president and CEO of\u00a0Lead From Within<\/a>, says there are 12 common phrases leaders should ban from their vocabulary if they want their words to have a positive impact on others.<\/p>\n

  1. \u201cDo it my way.\u201d<\/strong>If you hire a group of talented individuals to use their skills and expertise to perform a job, then tell them how to do it, you only alienate and disempower them.<\/li>\n
  2. \u201cThat will never happen.\u201d<\/strong>Daskal says that using the word\u00a0\u201c<\/em>never\u201d closes a door and makes leaders sound unprofessional and limited. Nothing is impossible\u2014there are always opportunities and options.<\/li>\n
  3. \u201cDo you know what I mean?\u201d<\/strong>It\u2019s always important to make sure you\u2019re connecting with people and that everyone\u2019s on the same page. However, leaders must do so in a way that isn\u2019t condescending and annoying.<\/li>\n
  4. \u201cIt\u2019s none of your business.\u201d<\/strong>Anything that pertains to the project or to the team is everyone\u2019s business.<\/li>\n
  5. \u201cThat was my idea.\u201d<\/strong>As a team, you do things together to accomplish great things. Focusing on individuals\u2014especially yourself\u2014is inappropriate on a team project where the goal is a collective accomplishment<\/a> and result.<\/li>\n
  6. \u201cYou\u2019re doing it wrong.\u201d<\/strong>There are many ways to tell people if they\u2019re moving off track. Daskal says leaders must remember that people do things in different ways, so they may just be taking a different approach. If you think someone is in error, start a dialogue<\/a> instead of making pronouncements.<\/li>\n
  7. \u201cBefore you say that, let me tell you \u2026\u201d<\/strong>Why would you want to shut people down or tell them not to speak? Communication is key<\/a> to great teamwork, and you want to encourage people to express themselves. Listen before you speak.<\/li>\n
  8. \u201cI already knew that.\u201d<\/strong>Even if it\u2019s true, listen again. Maybe this time you\u2019ll learn something new.<\/li>\n
  9. \u201cBecause I said so.\u201d<\/strong>This phrase, the hallmark of halfhearted parenting, will make people roll their eyes and lose all respect for your leadership.<\/li>\n
  10. \u201cYou must have misunderstood.\u201d<\/strong>Misunderstandings happen, but it\u2019s unprofessional and disrespectful to assume that a miscommunication was entirely the other person\u2019s fault. You don\u2019t want to make people feel they\u2019re not smart enough to understand what you want from them.<\/li>\n
  11. \u201cWhat\u2019s in it for me?\u201d<\/strong>This phrase shouldn\u2019t even be in a leader\u2019s vocabulary. A team is a collective, and what happens to one happens to all.<\/li>\n
  12. \u201cI\u2019m the boss.\u201d<\/strong>Your team knows you\u2019re the boss. You wouldn\u2019t have to remind them if you acted like their boss\u2014by letting them do their job, empowering them, supporting them and helping them develop.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>
